Awareness | PTP Support on QIO Devices

Learn about the current PTP support on QIO devices.

Updated at March 24th, 2025

Information

QIO devices currently support Two-Step PTP but do not support One-Step PTP.

In One-Step mode, the Sync message contains the precise timestamp directly, while in Two-Step mode, the accurate timestamp is conveyed through a separate Follow_Up message.

This occurs only for systems using an external clock leader.

When capturing PTP traffic (typically PTPv2), look for the "Announce" and "Sync" messages. If you see a "Follow_Up" message associated with the "Sync" message, it indicates that Two-Step PTP is being used.

The "Two-Step" flag or PTP_TWO_STEP field will often be visible in the PTP packet details.

  • PTP-TWO_STEP: True indicates Two-Step PTP is being used.
  • PTP-TWO-STEP: False indicates One-Step PTP is active.

One-Step PTP support for QIO devices is planned for a future update.
