Tech Note | MPA-Q Analog Mode Setup
Learn how to set up and update the MPA-Q Series amplifiers in Analog Mode.
Information
MPA-Q amplifiers have two modes of operation controlled by a rear-panel Mode switch:
- Q-SYS Mode: The amplifier joins a Q-SYS system and receives firmware updates automatically from the Q-SYS Core processor. No manual firmware update is done on the amplifier itself in this mode.
- Analog Mode: The amplifier operates as a standalone analog unit (not managed by a Q-SYS Core). In this mode, firmware must be updated manually by the user because the Q-SYS system is not involved.
To update firmware on an MPA-Q in Analog Mode, you must use a standalone application MPA-Q Analog Mode Updater. This utility is available from the Q-SYS Software & Firmware page.
Note
The updater works only when the amplifier is in Analog Mode. If the amp is currently set to Q-SYS Mode, toggle the Mode switch on the rear of the unit to Analog and then reboot the amplifier. The reboot is required for the mode change to take effect.
Requirements
- MPA-Q Series amplifier
- Windows PC w/ RJ-45 network connection
- at least 1 RJ-45 network cable
- Network Switch (optional)
Procedure
1. Find Amplifier IP Address
When the amplifier is powered on in Analog Mode, you need to obtain its IP address from the front panel display:
- Press the PAGE button on the front panel repeatedly until you see the “LAN A IP Address” screen.
- The amplifier’s current IP address will be shown (for example, 192.168.5.101 or perhaps a 169.254.x.x number).
- Note the IP address exactly as displayed.
- You will enter this address into the updater application on your PC.
Note
If the IP address appears as 0.0.0.0 or is blank, the amplifier may not be connected to a network or has not obtained an address.
2. Configure PC Network Settings
To run the firmware updater, the Windows PC must be on the same network as the amplifier You can connect directly by plugging an Ethernet cable from your PC’s network port to the amplifier’s LAN A port. Or, connect both the PC and the amplifier to the same LAN (for example, the same network switch or router).
Note
By default, MPA-Q amplifiers are set to obtain an IP address automatically (via DHCP).
Using DHCP
If the amplifier is using DHCP, the simplest method is to set the PC to obtain an IP address automatically as well. Both devices will then receive compatible addresses from the network. If connected directly the amplifier without a DHCP server, both the PC and amp should auto-assign link-local addresses in the 169.254.x.x range. In this case, leave the PC on automatic IP. The addresses will self-configure and work together.
To verify this:
- Open Windows Network Settings.
- Press Windows Key + R, type ncpa.cpl, and hit Enter. This opens the Network Connections control panel displaying available network adapters.
- Right-click on the active Ethernet adapter connected to the amplifier.
- Select Properties.
- In Properties, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
- Click Properties.
- Choose Obtain an IP address automatically.
- Also choose Obtain DNS server address automatically.
- Click OK to save.
Your PC will now try to get an IP from the network (or assign itself a 169.254.x.x address if no DHCP is present).
Using Static IPs
If using a static IP and no DHCP server is present, a static IP will need to be set on the PC in the same subnet as the amplifier to allow communication. For example, if the amp is 192.168.10.50 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, set the PC to 192.168.10.51 with a 255.255.255.0 subnet mask.
- In Properties, select TCP/IPv4 Properties.
- Select Use the following IP address.
- Enter an IP address in the same subnet as the amplifier.
- Click OK to apply the settings.
Ping Test
After configuring the network, it’s a good idea to verify that your PC can reach the amplifier.
- Open a Command Prompt.
- Use the ping command (e.g., ping 192.168.10.50) to see if the amplifier responds.
If you get replies, the PC and amplifier are on the same network and ready to communicate.
3. Update Firmware
With the amplifier in Analog Mode and the PC network now configured, you can proceed to update the firmware using the steps below:
- Download the MPA-Q Analog Mode Updater on your Windows PC from the Q-SYS Software & Firmware page.
- Run the installer.
- Launch the updater application.
- It will prompt you for the amplifier’s IP address.
- Enter the amplifier’s IP address obtained from the front panel and connect or select the device in the app.
- Start the firmware update by following the on-screen instructions in the updater.
- You will likely need to select the firmware file and then initiate the update process.
- Wait for the update to complete.
Caution
Do not power off or disconnect the amplifier or PC during the update. The amplifier may reboot automatically once the firmware is applied.
- The updater should confirm when the process is finished successfully. At that point, the amplifier is updated.
After the update, the amplifier will run the new firmware. You can confirm the currently running firmware version on the front panel display of the unit.
