How To | Save a Q-SYS design file to the Core without it changing the current gain structure or other parameters

Procedure


Every time you "push to a Core" you typically do it one of two ways: 

  • Save to Core and Run (F5). 
  • OR Load from Core and Connect (F8).

To prevent parameter changes, it is recommended to use the Load from Core and Connect (F8) option instead. Click on both to see the difference in behavior. 

Save to Core and Run (F5)

You have a file saved on your PC that you've been working on. You open the file in Q-SYS Designer, perhaps modify it or not, then "Save to Core and Run" (F5). 

Regardless if it is the same file as in the Core or not, it overwrites whatever is currently running and adjusted in the Core.

If it IS the same filename as what is in the Core, there is a good chance the Core had had some minor live tweaks (gain changes, etc.) since the previous F5, but your PC-version of the file didn't have those adjustments because there was no explicit "Save" command issued after those adjustments and tweaks. 

Doing the F5 now just wiped out those adjustments, reverting them back to the last-saved version that was on your PC. 

 
 

Load from Core and Connect (F8)

  1. Launch Q-SYS Designer, then IMMEDIATELY "Load from Core and Connect" or pressing F8. Now you have just pulled out of the Core its RUNNING schematic and are viewing it "live". 
  2. You can tweak parameters and hear changes. 
  3. Now do a "Disconnect" (F7) -- you've just copied the currently running schematic to your PC but you are no longer connected to (and affecting) the Core. 
    • It will have the most-recent gain settings, EQs etc. that were in the Core at the instant you did the F7. 
    • You are free to add or delete something: 
      • more blocks
      • wiring
      • signal paths
      • new UCI pages
      • new wiring
      • whatever other changes that are needed to the schematic 
    • This retains the parameter settings that are in the Core UNLESS you do an Emulate (F6) and tweak some values. 
      • But F7 will put you back into Design mode, with the most-recent parameter values (either from the Core or from your Emulate mode). 
  4. Now you can push the design back into the Core with F5. 
    • The existing Core will briefly stop to accept the modified design. 
    • Since you have now pushed back the SAME file with likely the same settings that you just pulled, the Core will start running the design with those last-known parameter values. 
  5. You can ALWAYS do a Save command from the File menu (Ctrl-S) after any tweaks or adjustments. 
    • In fact, it is advisable to do so. 
    • This will force any recent live changes, settings, and adjustments to be saved to your PC copy of the file as well, essentially syncing the running design with the saved design. 
    • Do so and you'll never have the issue of a subsequent "push" of the design changing parameter settings that were in the Core.
