Awareness | Understanding MFC port specifications on MP-M Series devices

Updated at February 23rd, 2024

Information

The intent of this article is to provide additional information on the RJ-45 connectors used for the MFC ports on MP-M Series devices. These ports are used for interconnectivity between the MP-M40 or MP-M80 and one or more MP-MFC controllers.

Caution

Although the MFC ports use RJ-45 style connectors, they are used for serial communication ONLY.

These connectors do not support ethernet connectivity. An MP-M Series device will not be able to connect to other MP-M devices through a network switch and connecting a power-over-ethernet (PoE) source to an MFC ports will cause damage to the connected MP-M Series devices.

MFC Port Cable Specifications

The MFC port pinout is as follows:

The MP-M40 or MP-M80 will output +15V on all pins labeled ‘+V’. The specification can go down to +7V. The pins labeled ‘RS485_A’ and ‘RS485_B’ will output 1.9V when operating under normal conditions.

It is possible to use either 568-A or 568-B wiring configurations when custom-wiring CAT5 cabling.  The color coding for 568-A and 568-B is as follows:
